Prom Time! Heels or Flats?

Prom Shoes with Tassles from Dress W+E

Prom Shoes with Tassles from Dress W+E

Gorgeous dress, Cinderella high healed shoes, aching feet.  Not exactly how you imagined your Prom night right?  Being sure the shoe fits correctly is the key to surviving the evening with your souls in tack .  But maybe there is an alternative to those skinny 5 inch platforms.  Consider the flat. I have done some research and was surprised to see not only the quantity of fashionable flats available but how fierce the designs are.  Whether you are into bows, gems or buckles there is a flat for you. And they are affordable!  With the flat, you will find yourself dancing until dawn!

#Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty Exhibit in London

Exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London

Exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London

I just bought my tickets to attend the Alexander McQueen exhibit, Savage Beauty in London!! To say I am excited is an understatement.  I am over the top beside myself! I am an Alexander McQueen fanatic.  He is my muse, my inspiration, my spirit guide. I own and have read every book written on him.  My design aesthetic and illustration style is influenced by him.  My dream is to attend Central Saint Martins and my goal is to be an Executive in his company someday.  Now just to get the attention of Sarah Burton!!  I know I am only one of thousands of designers who likely claim the same thing.  I also ground myself in the reality that there will only be one Alexander McQueen.  But his life, and his contribution to the world of fashion really means something to me.  It is what gets me up in the morning, and what I think about before I go to bed at night.  Thank you Alexander McQueen.  @WorldMcQueen

I always feel grateful and blessed to work with amazing clients who have a clear vision of what they want from a design perspective but allow me to let my creative juices flow.  In this case I was hired by my good friend Kayla to design her Junior prom dress for Spring,  2015.  Kayla is a perfect combination of naughty and nice.  She wanted a dress that made her feel like a princess, had a vintage flare, but one that was modernized to embody her inner “goth.” Her favorite color is red so it was a must to incorporate that color as a primary feature of the dress. Above and below are the concept drawings and final product.  Taking orders for 2016 :-).  Enjoy!

#Justin Orlick’s Beyond Courage: A Holocaust Retrospective through the Lens of Fashion

Every year I submit multiple fashion entry’s into the #Scholastic Art and Writing awards competition.  This year, my goal was to create a piece of fashion that was more than just something pretty or unconventional for the judges to look at.  I wanted to use fashion as a vehicle to tell a story, send a message, and make a statement.  Below is the inspiration behind my Silver Award Winning entry.

Justin Orlick: Beyond Courage

Justin Orlick Award Winning Design: Beyond Courage: A Holocaust Retrospective

For my Scholastic Gedenk Award for Tolerance submission I selected my dress “Beyond Courage: A Holocaust Retrospective.”  As background, in the “Beyond Courage” design I utilized fashion as my vehicle to make a statement and tell the story of the Holocaust from the perspective of the resistance movement.   The final design highlights the courage and strength of the Jews during the Holocaust and those that risked their lives to save others.  The theme of this dress was focused on the history of the Holocaust highlighting the lesser known resistance movement.  My goal was to pay homage to the people (Jewish and non-Jewish) who lost their lives while telling the stories of survivors who lived to document the event to be sure it never happens again.   As a historical back-drop I incorporated photos and illustrations of both the survivors and victims.  Each wood piece was hand collaged with stories, poems, photographs, illustrations and artwork from the Holocaust.  This dress was intended to represent the strength and heroism demonstrated between strangers during this tragic period in history.  The dress took over 300 man hours to complete.

The foundation of the dress was made from over 150 pieces of recycled wood that were individually hand collaged with graphics, paper and other multi-media elements.  The wood pieces represent the barracks in which the Jewish people had to sleep in the concentration camps.  The wood is hard and imperfect and uncomfortable like the conditions in the camps.   I also utilized smaller pieces of wood hand painted in black highlighting the names and faces of survivors and victims.  While only a small part of millions, these people were selected for their participation in the resistance movement both during and following the Holocaust.  The black and white faces on the black background are very graphic in normal light but in black light shine bright like living spirits.  The wood pieces are connected with wire representing the barbed wire around the concentration camps and shows the connection between all of the survivors and those who died or were murdered.

The top of the dress was made from a yellow linen fabric similar to the garments the prisoners were forced to wear in the camps.  The mustard yellow color of the top represents the yellow badge (or yellow patch) also referred to as a Jewish badge which was a cloth patch that Jews were ordered to sew onto their outer garments to mark them as Jews in public.   The hand crocheted yarn, which overlays the top, graphically and abstractly represents the Jewish star itself.  I used a “cobblestone” yarn for the belt and top as it represents the cobblestone streets in the ghettos. Finally the black skirt underneath the dress is made from a softer material.  It acts as backdrop for the wood pieces but also let’s light shine through as a representation of hope.

The underlying message:  Never again!

What’s the Fuss with Florals?

Floral prints were a bloom on the runway and are found in every retail store this Spring. Designers went far beyond your garden variety prints. They are modern, complex, oversized, colorful and mixed! Looks a lot like my mom’s garden. Frankly, until now, I was never a big fan of floral prints. I could live without Lily Pulitzer pastels..until now. From Marc Jacobs to Alexander McQueen florals became the new black. Below are some of my favorites.

Fashion Graveyard or Treasure Trove? Photography by #Justin Orlick

I recently went to a flea market in my local area.  I absolutely love the quest of finding something old that can be re-purposed and made new again.  As a trolled through the isles I starting noticing the mannequins with beautiful vintage hats, jewelry and accessories.  It was as if they were reaching out to me.  Here are some of the pictures I took.  I asked myself; ” is this a fashion graveyard or a treasure trove?”  I voted the later.

My New Obsession: Styling with a Scarf

I am scarf obsessed!  There should be a group for this.  I wear a scarf with every outfit during every season. I have over 50 scarves hanging from a lamp in my room.  Embarrassing I know. It is next to my stack of hats…but we will save that story for another day.   I found this article on unique ways to style with scarves.  Thought it was worth sharing with my fellow scarf addicts!

I have been seeing this stylish way of wearing a scarf on pinterest a lot. And I like it. It was seen at the Burberry’s fall fashion show last year and is eventually making its way to the streets. You can pull it off with a dress or jeans. It is a simple yet fashionable look and works well with or without a belt.
